NEW YORK - Shares of apparel makers rose early Thursday as retailers reported stronger-than-expected sales for May.
Consumers appeared to step up their shopping as tax rebate checks hit their mailboxes.
How shares of some apparel makers performed shortly after the market opened:
Jones Apparel Group Inc. rose 38 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $16.63.
VF Corp. added 23 cents to $74.03.
Polo Ralph Lauren gained 47 cents to $69.54.
Liz Claiborne Inc. climbed 16 cents to $17.01.
