NEW YORK - Shares of apparel makers closed lower Friday along with the broader market as oil prices soared more than $10 a barrel to a new record and unemployment climbed much more than anticipated.
The Labor Department said the nation's unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent in May from 5 percent in April. The rate, logging its biggest monthly rise since February 1986, is now at its highest level since October 2004.
How shares of some apparel makers performed:
Jones Apparel Group Inc. fell 92 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $15.80.
VF Corp. slipped $1.59, or 2.1 percent, to $72.78.
Polo Ralph Lauren declined $2.79, or 4 percent, to $66.78.
Liz Claiborne Inc. shed 73 cents, or 4.2 percent, to $16.55.
