BOSTON - The state's struggling fishing industry is getting a much-needed boost.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has agreed to distribute $13.4 million in disaster relief to the commercial groundfish fleet.
The Patrick administration asked for the aid to help fishermen hurt by federal restrictions on groundfish.
More than $11 million will go to owners of fishing boats. Another $1.5 million will help crew members, including with a program to cover health insurance.
Those with federal groundfish permits will receive checks based on the number of qualified vessels and days at sea each vessel has been allocated--about $400 per day at sea and up to $36,000 per vessel.
Those with state permits will receive about $7,500 each.
