Mylan gets FDA approval to market generic Sonata

PITTSBURGH - Mylan Inc. said Monday the Food and Drug Administration approved the company's application to sell generic capsules of Sonata, an insomnia treatment.

The company will immediately begin shipping Zaleplon capsules in 5 and 10 mg doses.

Sonata capsules are manufactured by Bristol, Tenn.-based King Pharmaceuticals Inc. The brand-name drug had sales of about $88 million in the year ended in March, according to IMS Health.

Mylan shares declined 2 cents to $12.72 in midday trading.
