NEW YORK - Palm Inc.'s popular Centro smart phone is launching on Verizon Wireless, the companies said Thursday.
A blue model of the Centro will be available from Verizon Wireless' stores and Web site for $99 starting Friday, the companies said.
The Centro is a more compact version of Palm's longtime flagship Treo phone, and proved a hit when introduced by Sprint Nextel Corp. in October and later by AT&T Inc.
The Centro was largely responsible for boosting Palm's share of the U.S. smart phone market to 13.4 percent in the first quarter this year, from 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter, according to survey by research firm IDC.
Palm shares rose 77 cents, or 12 percent, to $7.06 in midday trading.
