LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The effects of a tight state budget are beginning to show up on Kentucky campuses.
The University of Louisville's budget cuts more than $6 million in expenses and contains no faculty pay raises.
University President James Ramsey said the $243 million budget approved Thursday by the school's board was "ugly."
"It doesn't meet our needs going forward," he said.
Board chairman J. Chester Porter said the budget reflects the economy.
"Not only are public universities having to cut back and make some very difficult decisions, especially in reference to employees, but all of us in the private business arena have to do the same thing," he said.
Some students were disappointed with the situation.
"I know we have a new governor," said Alycia Thompson of Scranton, Pa. "I thought one of his things was to help education, and he decided to cut funding to higher education."
Meanwhile, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents approved a $670 million budget at its quarterly meeting on Friday.
The board also announced it will cut 240 jobs after having to cut more than $13.5 million in state funding.
