NEW YORK - A dip in the price of oil lifted airline stocks, including UAL Corp. and Ryanair Holdings PLC, helping send the Nasdaq 100 to a higher close on Friday.
Airline stocks can get a boost from lower oil prices, as fuel represents one of the largest costs for a carrier.
UAL, which operates United Airlines, rose 55 cents, or 8.7 percent, to $6.86.
Another airline, Ireland-based Ryanair Holdings PLC, rose $2.39, or 8.2 percent, to $31.40.
An analyst upgrade lifted shares of Apollo Group Inc., up $3.73, or 7.7 percent, to $52.24.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, rose 41.75 points, or 2.2 percent, to 1,966.01, with only seven stocks declining. The broader Nasdaq composite added 50.15points, or 2.09 percent, to 2,454.50.
On the losing side, Leap Wireless International Inc. lost $2.55, or 4.8 percent, to $50.76.
Juniper Networks Inc., which develops networking products, slipped 38 cents to $24.19.
Personal navigation device maker Garmin Ltd. declined 29 cents to $44.91.
