NEW YORK - The Nasdaq 100 index rose Monday as the price of oil finshed lower after a choppy session, with shares of Hansen Natural Corp. advancing to help send the index higher.
Hansen's stock surged $3.44, or 10 percent, to $37.72.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, gained 18.75 points, or nearly 1 percent, to 1,984.76. The broader Nasdaq composite rose 20.28 points to 2,474.78.
Research in Motion Ltd. advanced $8.02, or 6 percent, to $140.98, as some analysts touted the BlackBerry maker and predicted a strong fiscal first quarter.
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. gained $2.23, or 5.3 percent, to $44.73, following data that showed its Parkinson's drug Azilect can slow progression of the disease. Also, a Merrill Lynch analyst upgraded the stock to "Buy" from "Neutral."
On the losing side, Comcast Corp. slipped 46 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $21.28.
Focus Media Holding Ltd. declined 63 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $29.17.
Apollo Group Inc., a for-profit education company, shed 91 cents to $51.33, helping to reverse gains from Friday when an analyst upgraded the stock.
