E-Trade customer assets rise 4 percent

NEW YORK - Retail brokerage firm E-Trade Financial Corp. said Wednesday total customer assets increased 3.9 percent in May compared with the prior month.

Total customer assets increased to $180.94 billion during the month from $174.13 billion in April. Customer assets are still 15.6 percent lower than the $214.4 billion at the end of May in 2007.

Daily average revenue trades increased 4.1 percent during the month to 188,333 from 180,970 a month earlier. E-Trade averaged 171,387 revenue trades each day during May 2007.

E-Trade added about 21,000 new retail accounts during May, ending the month with about 4.8 million total retail accounts. E-Trade had about 4.6 million accounts open at the end of May last year.

Shares of E-Trade rose 7 cents in premarket trading to $3.75.
