NEW YORK - Shares of electrical equipment companies opened lower as the broader market declined on a worse-than-expected reading on June consumer confidence from the Conference Board and a profit warning from UPS.

In industry news, a Credit Suisse analyst downgraded shares of Emerson Electric Co. to "Neutral" from "Outperform," saying shares trade at a premium to its peers.

Here's how some shares of electrical equipment makers are faring:

Emerson, down $1.62, or 3 percent, to $52.01.

Cooper Industries Ltd., down $1.15, or 2.8 percent, to $40.73.

General Cable Corp., down $2.23, or 3.5 percent, to $62.07.

Avnet Inc., down 93 cents, or 3.2 percent to $27.92.
