Mesa Air Group says its interisland carrier go! carried nearly 88,000 passengers last month, about 30,000 more than it did in May 2007.

Go! also announced it will start charging a $25 service charge for checking a second bag.

The company says the fees starting July 15 are needed because of soaring fuel costs.

Jonathan Ornstein, Mesa's chairman and CEO, says the company has instituted the charge instead of raising the overall cost of a ticket.

Hawaiian Airlines began charging $25 for a second bag only on their mainland flights June 10.
