WASHINGTON - Florida electric and natural gas utility owner Teco Energy Inc. spent $310,000 lobbying on energy and environmental issues in the first quarter, according to a recent disclosure form.

The Tampa, Fla.-based company lobbied on legislation dealing with energy efficiency, climate change, solar energy tax credits and a proposal to mandate that utilities get a portion of their power from renewable sources, according to an April 16 filing with the House clerk's office.
The power industry would likely face heightened costs should Congress pass legislation designed to curb emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas linked to climate change. However, builders of carbon-free nuclear power plants could stand to benefit.
Teco Energy spent $1.3 million lobbying last year.
