WASHINGTON - Applied Materials Inc. spent $179,000 in the first quarter to lobby on renewable energy, research spending and other issues, according to a recent disclosure form.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, which makes semiconductors and solar cell equipment, lobbied on renewable energy incentives, immigration, science and defense research, and taxes, according to an April 17 filing with the House clerk's office.
Besides lawmakers, the company lobbied the White House, and the departments of Commerce, Defense, Energy and Treasury in the first three months of the year.
