The once-daily drug is already approved for children and adolescents ages 6 to 17.

J&J said Concerta is manufactured using a proprietary delivery technology that allows for controlled delivery of the drug.

The active ingredient in Concerta is methylphenidate, the same compound in Novartis AG's Ritalin LA.

In afternoon trading, J&J shares rose 5 cents to $64.31.

(This version CORRECTS 2nd graf to read that Concerta had been on the market for children ages 6 to 17, not 18).)
