WASHINGTON - The American Insurance Association, which represents 350 major property and casualty insurance companies, spent $460,000 in the first quarter to lobby the federal government.
The Washington-based trade group lobbied on legislation affecting insurance for floods, terrorism, hurricanes and tornadoes, as well as on data privacy, asbestos, and foreclosure prevention, according to an April 21 filing with the House clerk's office.
Owners of property, casualty and auto insurers include Berkshire Hathaway Inc., Travelers Cos. Inc., Allstate Corp., Chubb Corp. and Progressive Corp.
Besides lawmakers, the trade group lobbied the Commerce and Treasury departments, the White House, U.S. Trade Representative's office, Council of Economic Advisers and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Among those registered to lobby on behalf of the trade group was Joseph Engelhard, formerly an official with the Treasury Department and a Republican staffer for the House Financial Services Committee and Joint Economic Committee.
