Florida Power & Light and Progress Energy on Tuesday went before the state's Public Service Commission to seek a rate adjustment. The companies say they're paying more for oil and coal to generate electricity.

FP&L asked for an increase of about $16 a month on an average bill from August through December. Progress Energy sought what amounted to a $9 increase.

PSC members expressed concern about the impact on consumers.

The PSC agreed to allow Progress to pass along half of the cost of the increase this year with the other half being assessed next year.

Commissioners are still discussing FP&L's request.
