PLEASANTON, CALIF. - Supermarket retailer Safeway Inc. said Tuesday that Diane M. Dietz, who formerly oversaw brands including Crest toothpaste, Oral-B toothbrushes and Scope rinses at Proctor & Gamble, will be the company's new executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

Dietz, who is credited with rejuvenating the Crest brand, will oversee marketing, merchandising, manufacturing and distribution of products at Safeway, one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America.
"Her broad experience running one of the most valuable brand portfolios in the world and her demonstrated ability to drive sales at retail are well-suited for her responsibilities at Safeway," said Safeway's chairman, Steven A. Burd, in a statement.
Safeway operates 1,740 stores in the United States and Canada and had annual sales of $42 billion in 2007.
