Prior to its release, Wall-E had gained numerous favorable reviews, signaling that the movie was going to be successful at theaters. Some had the film as a candidate for the best movie of the year.

The movie did not reach the biggest weekend sales among Pixar's previous films. The Incredibles are at the top with $70.4 million in 2004 and Finding Nemo with $70.2 million in 2003.

Also on the last June weekend, "Wanted," an assassin thriller distributed by Universal, starring Angelina Jolie brought in $51.1 million, followed by Warner Bros' action comedy "Get Smart" with $20 million. Combined with Wall-E, the top three films earned about $133.6 million this weekend.

The next ten films rounding out the box office results include: "Kung Fu Panda," $11.7 million; "The Incredible Hulk," $9.2 million;"The Love Guru," $5.4 million; "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," $5 million;"The Happening," $3.9 million; "Sex and the City," $3.8 million and "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," $3.2 million.

Despite current high oil prices and the strained economy in the United States, revenues in theaters increased for a fifth straight weekend, up 22 percent more in the period of June 27-29 compared to the same period in 2007 according to statistics from Media by Numbers.
