NEW YORK - Internet software and services stocks finished mostly lower Wednesday, following the overall market's decline as crude oil rose to a new record above $144 a barrel.

Shares of Yahoo Inc. rose, however, as The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft Corp. has spoken with other media companies about working together in a deal that would essentially lead to Yahoo's breakup.

How key Internet software and services stocks performed Wednesday:

Yahoo Inc. rose 68 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $20.88.

Google Inc. fell $7.69 to $527.04.

EBay Inc. fell 63 cents to $27.11.

Akamai Technologies Inc. fell $1.68, or 4.7 percent, to $33.80.

VeriSign Inc. fell $1.36, or 3.5 percent, to $37.22.
