Northwest Airlines cargo unit hikes fuel surcharge

EAGAN, Minn. - The freight cargo unit of Northwest Airlines Corp. said Wednesday it will raise the fuel surcharges it charges customers on July 15, in an effort to partially offset the rising price of jet fuel.

Surcharges for shipments between the U.S. and Korea and Japan will increase to $1.25 per kilogram from $1.20 per kilogram previously. Trans-Atlantic shipments, except shipments continuing to Asia, will increase by the same amount.

Trans-Pacific surcharges from the U.S. to Shanghai and Guangzhou, China, will increase to 55 cents per kilogram from 50 cents.

Surcharges on Northwest Cargo's longest routes, including all other shipments between the U.S. and Asia, will increase to $1.35 per kilogram from $1.30.

The fuel surcharges are subject to government approvals in certain regions.

Domestic U.S. fuel surcharges will remain unchanged.

Shares of Northwest fell 69 cents, or 10.6 percent, to $5.83 in afternoon trading.
