Senator Barack Obama raised $55 million in February, which is $20 million more than Democrat former rival, Hillary Clinton and set a new record for a single month in any presidential campaign, the Democratic candidate said Thursday.
Obama's success showed a sharp burst of Democratic fundraising. Meanwhile, Republicans are lagging behind and are below their efforts of four years ago.
As of yet, Senator John McCain has not disclosed his February sum, though his fundraising has been well behind that of Obama and Clinton.
Speculators say Obama's lead was a result of more advanced internet capabilities which offer supporters various methods to donate.
The Democrats' three main committees; the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, raised $191.3 million in the 13-month period from January 2007 to the end of January 2008.
Senator Hilary Clinton had earlier disclosed that she had her biggest fundraising month in February which totaled $35 million, of which $34 million was used for the primary campaign.
