NEW YORK - Shares of financial stocks declined Wednesday, weighing the Dow Jones industrial average to a lower close.
The index shed 236.77 points, or 2.1 percent, to 11,147.44, with 27 stocks declining.
Bank of America Corp. slipped $1.48, or 6.3 percent, to $22.06.
Shares of American Express Co. declined $2.36, or 5.7 percent, to $39.01.
Shares of Citigroup Inc. declined 95 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $16.44.
On the rising side, shares of McDonald's Corp. gained 73 cents to $59.25.
Procter & Gamble Co.'s stock gained 14 cents to $63.80.
Merck & Co.'s stock rose 9 cents to $37.06.
