NEW YORK - Shares of utility companies opened mostly higher Thursday as the broader market gained on news of better-than-expected June retail sales.

Pepco Holdings Inc. rose 3 cents to $25.64

Consolidated Edison Inc. rose 12 cents to $39.13

Southern Co. rose 19 cents to $36.81
