NEW YORK - Shares of teen apparel retailers fell in midday trading Thursday, after reporting a mixed bag of June same-store sales reports amid a difficult environment.
Sports apparel and equipment retailer Zumiez Inc. was one of the weakest performers. The company said same-store sales fell 3.4 percent in June, missing analyst expectations of an 0.8 percent drop, hurt by weak sales of accessories and apparel. After an analyst from William Blair & Co. downgraded the stock, shares fell $2.79, or 16.3 percent, to $14.31.
Wet Seal Inc. was one of the few gainers. Shares edged higher as the company said same-store sales fell 2.9 percent, just beating the 3 percent decline analysts expected.
Shares added 2 cents, to $4.81.
Aeropostale Inc., typically one of the best performers in the sector, said same-store sales rose 12 percent, helped by strong merchandise assortment and successful promotions. Analysts had predicted a smaller 6.9 percent rise. The company also boosted its second-quarter guidance, but shares fell $1.07, or 3.3 percent to $30.89.
Both American Eagle Outfitters Inc. and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. reported that men's apparel performed stronger than women's apparel.
American Eagle said same-store sales fell 11 percent, bigger than the 8.9 percent analysts predicted.
Shares fell 19 cents to $12.80, after earlier trading as low as $12.60, its lowest point in more than five years.
Abercrombie & Fitch said same-store sales fell 3 percent, slightly more than the 2.8 percent drop analysts expected.
Shares fell $1.83, or 3.2 percent, to $55.35, after earlier bottoming out at $54.43, a nearly two-year low.
