LONDON - The U.S. dollar was mostly down against other major currencies in European trading Friday afternoon. Gold rose.
The euro traded at $1.5893, up from $1.5783 late Thursday in New York. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.5898.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Thursday, included 106.09 Japanese yen, down from 107.02; 1.0178 Swiss francs, down 1.0275; and 1.0096 Canadian dollars, up from 1.0087.
The British pound was quoted at $1.9896, up from $1.9775.
In midday trading in New York on Friday, the dollar bought 101.14 yen and 1.0178 francs, while the pound was worth $1.9891.
Gold traded in London at $949 per troy ounce, up from $930.75 late Thursday.
