Tenneco Canada Inc. workers learned Monday the company will lay off 104 of its 524 workers in September as part of a permanent staff reduction at the plant. It says the move is a direct result of GM cuts announced last month.

The facility assembles shocks for a range of GM small pickups and SUVs. The vast majority of the layoffs are manufacturing jobs.

Six weeks ago, Detroit-based GM said it will close four truck and SUV plants and boost production of the smaller, more fuel-efficient cars that customers are demanding.
