LONDON - The U.S. dollar was lower against other major currencies in European trading. Gold rose.
The euro traded at $1.5927, up from $1.5916 late Monday in New York. Earlier, the euro hit a new record high of $1.6038, surpassing its previous record of $1.6018 set on April 22. By midday in New York, the euro fetched $1.5921.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Monday, included 104.79 Japanese yen, down from 106.12; 1.0015 Swiss francs, down from 1.0161; and 1.0018 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0096.
The British pound was quoted at $2.0043, up from $1.9944.
Later, in midday New York trading, the dollar bought 104.85 yen and 1.0095 francs, while the pound was worth $2.0030.
Gold traded in London at $986.00 per troy ounce, up from $968.00 late Monday.
