2 killed in southwest Houston stairwell collapse

HOUSTON - Two boys are dead and a third has been taken to a hospital after a stairwell collapsed on them as they played on a sidewalk at a southwest Houston apartment complex.

Houston fire officials say a 4-year-old and a 10-year-old died in the accident that occurred about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Westwood Fountains apartment complex.

A witness told Houston television station KTRK that she heard a crash, ran to a window and could hear a child screaming.

Assistant Fire Chief Omero Longoria told the Houston Chronicle that a 9-year-old was taken to the hospital with a broken leg.
