WHEELING, W.Va. - Work could resume on the Wheeling Tunnel soon and highways officials are still confident they'll meet the Nov. 1 deadline for the project's completion.

State Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox said Tuesday that the Division of Highways has reached an agreement with Safeco Insurance, the surety company for Ohio-based contractor Velotta Co.
Mattox said the work--including tile replacements--could begin as early as July 21. Once that's completed, electrical work on the westbound side of the tunnel will begin, meaning that side will be closed for roughly two months.
The project was originally scheduled to be finished in May 2007, but problems with removing the old tiles pushed the completion date back.
