A federal Jury in Riverside, California decided on Thursday that designer Carter Bryant came up with the idea for MGA Entertainment's Bratz dolls while he was still working at Mattel Inc in 1999 and 2000.

The jury held MGA and chief executive officer Isaac larian liable for interfering with the designer's Mattel contract.

Damages in the case will be decided by the same jury during the second phase of the trial. MGA could be forced to pay royalties or even give up its rights to make the dolls.

Mattel alleged that MGA secretly worked with Bryant to steal the idea for the Bratz doll while he was still working for Mattel. MGA maintained Bryant conceived the idea for the doll before his work with Mattel.

Shares of Mattel rose 58 cents, or 3.3 percent to $18.28 during normal trading hours. In after hours trading, the stock was up 79 cents, or 4.3 percent to $19.10.
