LONDON - The Scottish government says it has approved plans to build Europe's largest onshore wind farm.
Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said Monday the 152-turbine Clyde wind farm near Abington would be capable of powering up to 320,000 homes. Abington is about 40 miles southeast of Glasgow.
Salmond says the project will generate 548 megawatts and help Scotland meet its renewable energy targets.
The Scottish government says the Clyde project is bigger than the Whitelee wind farm, which is currently under construction near Glasgow. Whitelee is projected to have a generating capacity of 322 megawatts.
The Scottish government says the biggest working wind farm in Europe is the Maranchon wind farm in Guadalajara, Spain. It has a capacity of 208 megawatts.
