Revenue totaled $42.8 million for the 35 days ended July 1 compared with $45.7 million in the same period last year.

Revenue at the daily and community newspapers and shoppers slipped 8.6 percent to $23.2 million from $25.4 million.

Advertising sales dropped 13.5 percent to $16.5 million from $19.1 million, with the largest losses at the daily papers in retail, national and direct marketing ads. Community papers were also impacted by less classified advertising. Total interactive advertising revenue at the daily newspapers increased 3 percent to $1.29 million from $1.25 million.

Circulation revenue of $5 million stayed about the same. New commercial printing customers also helped to shore up some of the advertising shortage.

Sales at the company's radio and television stations fell 3.7 percent to $19.5 million from $20.3 million.

At the television group, revenue decreased 2.5 percent to $11.6 million compared with $11.9 million, largely from softness in the Tucson, Ft. Myers and Milwaukee markets, partially offset by an approximately $190,000 increase in political and issue advertising.

At the radio group, revenue dropped 5.3 percent to $7.9 million from $8.38 million because of softness in all of the company's radio markets except Milwaukee and Omaha and a $34,000 decrease in political and issue advertising.

Shares of the company added 5 cents to $4.78 in morning trading.
