PORTLAND, Maine - The combined operations of Portland-based TD Banknorth and New Jersey-based Commerce Bank will be known as TD Bank.

The combined company faced legal challenges to using the TD Commerce Bank name. The company was prevented from using that name on signs and marketing material in some counties in Massachusetts because of a trademark infringement lawsuit by Worcester, Mass.-based Commerce Bank & Trust.
TD Banknorth President and Chief Executive Bharat Masrani said the company didn't want to spend valuable time and resources on a legal challenge.
He said the company will still draw in Commerce Bank roots with its name and slogan, "TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank."
Toronto-based TD Bank Financial Group, the parent company of TD Banknorth, acquired Commerce Bancorp. for $8.5 billion earlier this year.
