"The Dark Knight" grosses $238.6 million in 1st Week

"The Dark Knight" grossed $238.6 million dollars at the U.S. Box Office on its first week, Warner Bros. said on Friday.

It is the biggest gross in one week in motion picture history. The previous record was held by 'Pirates of the Caribbean II" which grossed $196 million in 2006.

"It exceeded our expectations quite a bit," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film launched on July 18, breaking box office records throughout the first week, including best opening weekend at $158.4 million.

The movie's international gross was $72 million in the first week, more than double the results of Batman Begins over the same period of time, according to Vice President of Distribution , Warner Bros. Pictures International, Nancy Carson.

In the United Kingdom - birthplace of director Christopher Nolan and actor Christian Bale who stars as Batman - the film had the biggest opening day of the year grossing $5 million.

As for Australia, - birthplace of Heath Ledger who plays the Joker - the results have surpassed the lifetime cummulative box office for Batman Begins with $18.8 million.

The film opened in 20 markets in the first week, including Mexico and Brazil. The second week will see openings in Italy and several other European countries. The movie will open in Japan, Korea, France, Germany and Spain in August.
