NEW YORK - Electric and gas utility CenterPoint Energy Inc. said Wednesday it expects 2008 earnings to be in the upper half of its previous guidance.

The company expects earnings on the higher end of a range between $1.15 and $1.25 per share.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were predicting a profit of $1.23 per share.
Shares rose 50 cents, or 3.2 percent, to $16.01 during afternoon trading. The stock has traded between $13.51 and $18.63 during the last 52 weeks.
