"Ugly Betty" America Ferrera wins on ALMA Awards

"Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera, 24, won the Chevy Entertainer of the Year award for her characterization of Betty Suarez in the show, during the 2008 ALMA Awards yesterday.

The ABC TV comedy program won the award yesterday at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles. The show also won awards for Best Director of a Television series and Best Performance by a Latino ensemble in a television series.

"It's the largest stage Latinos have in Hollywood to be able to recognize the positive portrayals of Latinos in television and music and film. So you'll see a lot of talent here tonight," said host Eva Longoria according to CBS.

The ALMA Awards stand for America Latino Media Arts and is meant to recognize outstanding achievements of Latin artists in the fields of film, television and music.

The awards will air on September 12 on ABC at 8 p.m. EST/ 9 p.m. CT.
