SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Autodesk Inc., which makes software used by architects to design products and buildings, said Wednesday it plans to acquire essentially all the assets of a German firm whose main product line helps engineers build power plants and other large facilities.

The acquisition of Elektro-CAE-Software's assets reflects an effort by San Rafael, Calif.-based Autodesk to expand further into European markets and sell designers more software for improving the control systems within their factories.
Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
Autodesk is buying Elektro-CAE-Software's assets from a German software company called Mensch und Maschine Software SE.
Autodesk's shares rose 25 cents to $36.86 in afternoon trading.
