Following the low-speed 30-minute test flight in Horseheads, N.Y., Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp. will test the helicopter's speed, low vibration, noise and other factors, said James Kagdis, manager of advanced programs.
"We think this technology has far-reaching opportunities for commercial and military customers," he said.
Kagdis said it could be eight to 10 years before the X2 technology reaches commercial and military markets.
A faster helicopter can increase the number of flights to offshore oil drilling rigs, improve search and rescue operations and more quickly transport patients to hospitals, Kagdis said.
The test follows more than four years of design, development and testing of the demonstrator aircraft.
Shares of United Technologies added 16 cents to $65.05 in afternoon trading.
