"X-Files" star David Duchovny, who currently plays a womanizing writer on the television series "Californication," said on Thursday he has entered a facility for treatment of sex addiction.
The 48-year-old star, who is married to actress Tea Leoni, is said to have entered the facility "voluntarily", according to his publicist.
"I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family," he said in a statement released Thursday by his lawyer, Stanton Stein.
Duchovny rose to fame playing FBI agent Fox Mulder, and now ironically stars as a sex obsessed character "Hank Moody" in the hit TV series "Californication," which has recently aired on Channel 5.
Cable network Showtime, which broadcasts the show, released a statement: "All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time."
The show's second season begins September 28.
Duchovny married actress Tea Leoni in 1997 and have two children together. Leoni starred in "Jurassic Park III" and "Spanglish."
