MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Alexza Pharmaceuticals said Tuesday its experimental drug significantly reduced symptoms of schizophrenia in a late-stage trial.

The company reported that a study of 344 schizophrenic patients showed AZ-004 significantly reduced agitation compared to placebo. Both a 5 and 10 milligram dose of the drug showed statistically significant results within two hours of treatment.
AZ-004 is an inhalable drug which Alexza is also studying as a potential treatment for migraine headaches.
Company executives said the drug's fast absorption and potential for self-administration would make it "a potentially important new drug candidate."
Shares of Alexza rose 10 cents to close at $5.41.
