Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal say the state is now demanding more information from the bank and considering possible sanctions. The bank at first said 500,000 Connecticut residents were potentially affected.
The bank in February lost backup computer tapes that contained names, Social Security numbers and other information, but it says there are no signs that the data has been misused.
The Bank of New York Mellon says a total of about 12 million people may be affected by the breach. The bank says it has put in place new standards and a worker training program.
