NEW YORK - Shares of some top gold companies were down at the close of trading:

Quotes

ABX	23.51	-2.19
GFI	6.81	-0.42
GG	20.41	-2.09
NEM	27.05	-2.66

Barrick Gold fell $.83 or 2.6 percent, to $30.57.

Gold Fields fell $.12 or 1.4 percent, to $8.34.

Goldcorp fell $.85 or 2.8 percent, to $29.20.

Newmont Mining fell $1.85 or 4.5 percent, to $39.54.
