Wet Seal Inc. reported same-store sales fell 8.7 percent, a larger drop than analysts expected, hurt by weak results at its Arden B chain aimed at older shoppers. At its namesake chain, weak demand for tops offset stronger sales of denim and accessories at its namesake chain.

Shares fell 28 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $4.82 during morning trading.

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. said same-store sales fell 11 percent, also a bigger drop than analysts expected. Results were weakest at the company's Abercrombie children's stores, its surf-inspired brand Hollister, and its Ruehl chain, which is aimed at older shoppers. Across all brands, weak clothing categories included women's knit tops, graphic tees and fleece and men's graphic tees.

Shares fell $3.37, or 6.2 percent, to $51.34.

Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. said same-store sales fell 6 percent, hurt by lower sales of accessories.

Though the results were better than analyst expectations, shares fell 10 cents to $6.80.

Aeropostale Inc., with its focus on value, was as usual a bright spot in the sector. Same-store sales rose 13 percent, easily surpassing analysts' expectations.

Shares fell 45 cents to $35.49 despite the positive news.

American Eagle Outfitters Inc., meanwhile, said August same-store sales fell 5 percent, a smaller drop than analysts expected, as demand for men's apparel offset weakness in the women's sector.
