COPPELL, Texas - Mannatech Inc., which makes dietary supplements and skin care products, said Friday the Securities and Exchange Commission is considering taking civil action against the company.

The company said regulators issued the company a "Wells Notice" over its dismissal of its public accountant Grant Thornton in October 2007. Mannatech disclosed in March that the SEC was investigating the issue.
Wells notices indicate that SEC staff is considering recommending civil enforcement action against individuals for violating various federal securities laws.
Mannatech said it would have an opportunity to defend itself against the charges, but could not predict the ultimate costs of responding to the issue.
Shares of Mannatech Inc. fell 4 cents Friday to close at $4.24. In after-hours trading, shares slid 19 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $4.05.
