More than 1.9 million unique visitors in the U.S. saw the "Thank you" page associated with a download of the new Google Chrome Web browser in the first week, the Internet audience measuring service noted.

The statistics from September 1 to September 7 reveal that 73 percent of visitors to the page were male, reaching nearly 1.4 percent of all U.S. users who went online during the week from home or work.

Men ages 35-49 represented 39 percent of all traffic to the page. About 14 percent of women ages 18-34 visited the page.

Meanwhile, the blogosphere's discussions about web browsers were dominated by Google Chrome talk. Nielsen says 0.92 percent of online consumer discussions were about the browser.

"The interest in all things 'Google' was apparent in the online discussion surrounding the somewhat unexpected Chrome launch," said Jon Stewart, research director, technology and search, Nielsen Online. "The browser was mentioned in nearly one percent of all online discussions the day after its launch – a respectable slightly-more-than-half of what the highly anticipated iPhone 3G generated when it launched earlier this summer."

Competitors saw relatively less talk. Firefox had a 0.4 percent discussion rate, while Internet Explorer was at 0.2 percent, Safari was at 0.09 percent and Opera was in 0.07 percent of consumer discussions.
