Yes, It's "official." September 19 marks International Talk like a Pirate Day.
Television and movie pirates have long been a staple of the entertainment spectrum, with swashbuckling heroes facing off against dastardly one-legged, one-eyed, parrot petting miscreants.
Who can't remember the scheming Captain Hook of Peter Pan lore. There are also the real pirates which went by names such as Blackbeard and even some with normal ones such as Henry Morgan.
Today, people around the world can revel in mangled English accents, adding a few "Arrrgh's," "Matey's" and "Scalleywags" to their vocabulary.
If you're not much of an extrovert, please only enhance your lexicon in the company of someone who is aware and accepting of the goofy "holiday."
It's "the only day of the year when you can talk like a pirate and not be entirely insane," is the mantra of the official site, talklikeapirate.com.
The occasion was founded by John Baur and Mark Summers back in 1995 during a racquetball game, according to their site. It also happened to be the same day as Summers' ex-wife's birthday.
As they tell it, the day gained fame when Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry wrote about it in 2002, after he decided to throw his "full support" behind the day.
If you'd like to get a full list of pirate phrases and update your pirate vocabulary check out the site. It even includes a pirate talk translator if you need some help to start.
