What once started as a goofy joke among friends has turned into something just as goofy but more well known.
September 19 marks International Talk Like a Pirate Day, where people around the world are told not to feel self conscious when imitating television and movie pirates.
The key to most phrases is adding the sound "Arrrr" every now and then.
It's "the only day of the year when you can talk like a pirate and not be entirely insane," is the mantra of the official site, talklikeapirate.com.
The occasion was founded by John Baur and Mark Summers during a racquetball game, according to their site.
As they tell it, the day gained fame when Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry wrote about it in 2002, after he decided to throw his "full support" behind the day.
If you'd like to get a full list of pirate phrases and update your pirate vocabulary check out the site. It even includes a pirate talk translator if you need some help to start.
