SAN FRANCISCO - Chile's Palin Syrah wine has encountered sales difficulties on the market, since John McCain announced Sarah Palin his running mate for the presidential candidacy, according to Celine Guillou, co-owner of the Yield Wine Bar.
The wine from Chile was selling very well in the City by the Bay before a certain governor from the state of Alaska chose his running mate, said Celine Guillou.
"Before McCain made his announcement it was selling very well, because it's an affordable wine and it's from South America," she said. "Then he made his announcement and we hear people making comments constantly about the wine".
Palin Syrah wine, taking its name from a ball used in a Chilean-style hockey game, has been on the bar's wine catalog for a while.
Guillou said customers have begun making their own descriptions about their wine.
"People started making suggestions like gunpowder, moose meat, hockey mom - the list goes on and on," Guillou continued. "It's funny, but it's all we've heard for the last couple weeks".
Since the wine's name has been unofficially placed on the blacklist of San Francisco, its place on Yield Wine Bar's list is endangered. "I think people try to see the humor in it, but we're in San Francisco, so most of the people we have in I'm going to suspect are fairly liberal. People like to joke about it, but for some people it evokes quite a visceral reaction", Guillou said.
Except Palin Syrah, the Palin vineyard also produces Palin Carménère and Palin Cabernet Sauvignon.
With all the threats on Palin Syrah present in San Francisco, in Houston, Palin Syrah has been rapidly taken off the shelves at Cepage Noir Wine Company. The store located in the Republican monopoly of Texas, had 74 bottles left out of cases stacked 20 high.
Sales have also been strong in democratic New York City for almost six months, since Sarah Palin showed up on the national political scene.
"I think is that some of the reason is that some people are going to buy it and cross out her name and maybe write Obama or Biden's name," said shop owner Scott Pactor.
Coming back to California, Guillou thinks a group of Republicans might come in to try to bring the sales up.
"Who knows? Eventually the sales could be tied to how she does in the polls. You have to appreciate San Francisco for what it is, I guess", said Guillou.
