A McCain campaign official said he was "optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement" and that "the McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the senator will travel to the debate this afternoon."
The statement from the McCain campaign said that "following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners."
Obama on Thursday challenged McCain to go through with the debate, telling an audience at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, "the American people deserve to hear directly from myself and Senator McCain about how we intend to lead our country."
McCain, who spoke earlier to the same group, said the economic crisis should take precedence.
The debate will be held at 9:00 pm EST in Oxford, Miss., the University of Mississippi, with domestic policy focus moderated by PBS's Jim Lehrer.
