NEW YORK - Covidien said Monday it named Chief Executive and President Richard J. Meelia to the additional position of chairman of the board of directors, replacing Dennis H. Reilley.

Reilley has been a nonexecutive chairman since Bermuda-based Covidien became an independent, publicly traded company in June 2007 by splitting from parent company Tyco International.
Meelia, 59, has served as CEO and president of Covidien since the Tyco spinoff.
Meanwhile, Timothy M. Donahue, was named lead director.
The changes are effective Oct. 1.
Shares of Covidien fell $2.56, or 4.7 percent, to close at $52.35 as the broader market fell dramatically following the House defeat of a financial bailout package.
